The goal of this project was to take a historical event and create a wine bottle label based on that event. I chose the prohibition and the creation of the 21st amendment which ended prohibition seeing as that was a significant time in history for partying and drinking.
When I work I always start by gathering inspiration for my idea and sketching out directions I can go in in a sketchbook. I wanted to go for a Roaring 20’s glam theme for this label so I focused on using geometric shapes and lines to accent the label. I also wanted to incorporate illustration into the label so I drew a couple of Flapper girls with gray and black markers. I settled on the illustration of the woman taking a sip from her glass because I thought it looked more elegant and would drive home the point of the brand, people’s right to drink alcohol.

After working on the illustrations, I then moved to Adobe Illustrator where I put together the general layout of the labels with the text placements and the geometric shapes that would act as a frame. I focused on fonts next looking for typefaces that showed elegance and extravagance. I chose to accent lines and the brand name in a golden yellow color to mimic the color of champagne and the extravagance of the time period.
For my final step, I scanned my drawing onto my computer and used photoshop to knock out the background, isolating the drawing. Then I simply placed the image into the Illustrator file and completed the project by mocking it up on a champagne bottle.
This project was exciting to work on because of all the challenges that it presented. During my process, I learned that there are specific legal regulations that need to be on alcohol labels which allowed me to problem-solve creatively in my design.
